Steelworkers Local President in Ohio Sentenced for Theft

Steelworkers  logoOn April 20, Jackie Kiedrowicz, former president of United Steelworkers of America Local 1200, was sentenced in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio, to two years probation and 200 hours of community service for embezzling $16,782.40 in funds from the Canton union. She also will have to pay a $2,000 fine. She pleaded guilty in February. The sentencing follows a probe by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Minnesota Steelworkers Local President Sentenced

Steelworkers logoOn April 13, Joe Self, former president of United Steelworkers of America Local 771, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota to five years probation and ordered to pay $37,571.09 in restitution and a $50 special assessment for destruction of union records. He pled guilty in November 2008. The local is based in Fort Worth, Texas. The actions follow a probe by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management.

Steelworkers Local Financial Secretary in Georgia Pleads Guilty

Steelworkers logoOn March 24, Johnny Banes, former financial secretary for Local 2401 of the United Steelworkers of America, pleaded guilty in the Superior Court of Cobb County (Georgia) to theft of union funds in the amount of $38,329. He then was sentenced to ten years probation and ordered to pay restitution in the same amount. The union is located in Mableton, a suburb of Atlanta. The sentencing follows a probe by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Steelworkers Local President in Detroit Charged

On March 4, Jerrold King, former president of United Steelworkers of America Local 842 in Detroit, was charged in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan with one count of records concealment. The charge follows a probe by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Financial Secretary of South Carolina Steelworkers Local Sentenced

Steelworkers logoChristina Geathers probably hasn't endeared herself to rank and file with United Steelworkers of America Local 357. That's because much of her income represented stolen dues. Geathers, formerly local financial secretary-treasurer with the Georgetown, South Carolina union, was sentenced on March 8 in U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina to time served to be followed by three years of supervised release, of which 16 months must be served in home confinement. She also will have to pay restitution.

Former Employee of Kentucky Steelworkers Local Sentenced

Steelworkers logoOn January 15, Ray Horton, a former employee of United Steelworkers of America Local 9443 in Robards, Ky., was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky to three years probation, including four months of community confinement, for embezzlement and mail fraud from the union. He also will have to pay $43,816.29 in restitution and $200 in court costs. He had pleaded guilty in October to stealing nearly $20,000 in local funds. The sentencing follows a probe by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Treasurer of PACE-Steelworkers Georgia Local Sentenced for Embezzlement

For Gary A. Barner, a 16-month sentence in federal prison for theft is anticlimactic. Maybe that's because he's already doing time in state prison for something a lot more serious. Barner, formerly treasurer for Local 518 of the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union (PACE), was sentenced in federal court on January 14 to one year and four months in prison for embezzling nearly $30,000 from the Rome, Ga.-based union. He pleaded guilty in October. PACE is now part of the United Steelworkers of America, the two having merged in 2005.

Upstate New York Steelworkers Treasurer Sentenced for Embezzlement

Steelworkers logoOn October 30, Norman Stefanik, former treasurer of United Steelworkers of America Local 1450, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York to a year and a day in prison for embezzling $46,013 from the Watertown union, which represents employees of Knowlton Technologies. The original reported sum was $25,808.29. He pled guilty in May. The sentencing follows an investigation by the Labor Department's Office of Labor-Management Standards.
