Former Treasurer of Chicago Local Sentenced for Theft

On February 12, William Sargent, Jr., former treasurer of American Federation of Government Employees Local 704 in Chicago, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois to five months in prison and a year of supervised release for theft from the union in the amount of roughly $31,000. He pleaded guilty in November to one count of larceny following a Labor Department probe. Prior to sentencing Sargent had paid $8,019.55 in restitution. He must pay an additional $22,995.74. Florida Local Secretary-Treasurer Indicted for Embezzlement

On November 19, Tarris Dallas, former financial secretary of Local 9-415 of United Steelworkers of America, was indicted in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida on one count of embezzling funds from the Fernandina Beach union in the approximate amount of $105,000.  The indictment follows an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.  (OLMS, 12/12/08).
